Outrage erupts after GOP leader travels to Mar-a-Lago to kiss Trump’s boots

The removal of Donald Trump from the Oval Office has already resulted in a slew of crucial changes to the way the federal government is run, with many of his cruelest policies being reversed via executive order by President Biden.
That said, some of the deeper damage inflicted on this country by Trump’s incompetent, racist, kleptocratic regime will take much longer to repair and some things—like the radicalization and rot within the GOP that Trump exploited and subsequently accelerated—might never be fixed.
Some conservatives, particularly those of the #NeverTrump persuasion, had hoped that the electoral defeat of Trump would bring an end to the MAGA movement as the image of the supposedly unstoppable Godking crumbled. Instead, we’ve seen Trump supporters retreat even further into their collective delusions, latching on to the lies that the election was stolen and that Biden is an illegitimate president.
The GOP is growing more insane not less, a disturbing reality made indisputable by the fact that a Republican supporter of QAnon, the deranged conspiracy theory which holds that a secret cabal of Democrats are engaged in pedophilia and Satanic worship behind closed doors, now serves in Congress.
Trump may be gone but his feverish beliefs remain like a malignant tumor at the heart of the Republican Party, which is why you see its officials refusing to distance themselves from a man who incited an insurrection against the government. It’s presumably this fear of alienating MAGA voters that compelled House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to fly down to Mar-a-Lago to meet with the disgraced ex-president.

A Trump PAC released an image of McCarthy posing with Trump and a statement insisting that the former president’s “popularity has never been stronger” and that his endorsement will be valuable during the 2022 midterm elections. The statement promises that Trump will be active in getting Republicans elected, confirmation of the idea that he intends to become a kingmaker within the GOP.

More interesting than the content of the statement though is what the photograph says about McCarthy. By embracing Trump even after the Capitol insurrection he is signaling that political power is far more important to him than democracy, that he—like so many members of his fallen, authoritarian party—will always put their own career interests over the good of the country. No true lover of America can ever cast a vote for a Republican after this.

“He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding."

Setting aside the obvious fact that Kevin McCarthy is a traitor and also an asshole, he has the worst fucking taste in shoes in the history of the world.

A source familiar with the matter tells @DanaBashCNN that some warned House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy not to go see Trump because it makes him look weak.
