John Cornyn sparks backlash with smear of Biden appointee for vague connection to Hunter
Republican senators find themselves in a difficult position these days with the impeachment trial of Donald Trump just days away.
On the one hand, they have a rabid base of disaffected members of the GOP still convinced of “the Big Lie” that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from their grasp and spouting QAnon conspiracy theories at every turn. These are the folks whose votes the Republican senators need if they have any hope of retaining their lofty and lucrative positions.
On the other hand, there’s the reality that the rest of the country subscribes to and which more closely resembles what passed for normal in the pre-Trump era.
Increasingly some GOP senators are finding that walking that line between the two competing visions of the world is impossible, and they are choosing to pursue the path that benefits their own future electoral prospects, doubling down on their defense of the twice-impeached ex-president while attacking their Democratic opponents.
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has apparently chosen that second path judging from this tweet that he sent out earlier today implying some sort of impropriety involved in the appointment of a colleague of the lawyer of presidential scion Hunter Biden to a top Justice Department post.

Reaction on social media to Senator Cornyn’s tweet positing a Kevin Bacon-like minimum degree of separation in nepotistic corruption was swift and merciless.

Remember when we found out a week ago that Flynn's brother is a general and had a role in the response to the insurrection that Flynn promoted?

Don't tell John Cornyn this, but I once worked with a guy named Hunter. I'm expecting a call from Joe any day now

I’m so glad I’m not the only who notices his obsession with calling for unity while being divisive st the same time. I’m from Texas and @JohnCornyn embarrasses us.

@JohnCornyn So how far are we going to go. And ex-colleague of Hunter Biden's lawyers brothers wife's sisters sons childhood friend? Should we bring him in too? #Pathetic #JaredAndIvanka #Trump

As Cornyn and other weasly Republicans try to distract the public with manufactured scandals in order to draw attention away from the impending impeachment trial that will expose at least some of the crimes of the Trump administration, savvy Americans are calling out the GOP on their hypocrisy and redirecting the attention to holding the party responsible for its sins.
Cornyn should be ashamed of his cowardly partisan actions that do nothing to reunite the country and to restore normalcy to our body politic.
Hopefully, Texas voters will use their knowledge of his character as gained from this episode to ensure that he is ousted from office in his next election cycle.
