While the Republican Party’s march to irrelevance has been taking place for quite some time, Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is taking a particularly self-destructive path for both himself and the GOP at large, judging from a statement he made to the War Room Pandemic podcast.

Rep. Gaetz offered to do something that Democrats have been clamoring for the fanatical supporter of the disgraced ex-president to do: resign his seat in the House of Representatives.

The catch is that the offer comes in the context of his being asked by Donald Trump to join his legal team representing him against the impeachment charges in the Senate, something that hasn’t happened, at least not yet.

“If the president called me and wanted me to go defend him on the floor of the Senate, that would be the top priority in my life. I would leave my House seat. I would do anything I had to do,” Gaetz told the podcast in a declaration of his undying fealty to the seditious failed presidential candidate.

“I view this cancellation of the Trump presidency and the Trump movement as one of the major risks to my people,” Gaetz said, without specifying exactly who was included in his definition of “my people.”

Gaetz’s fervent devotion to Trump inspired Twitter commentators to new heights of ridicule and sarcasm.

While it may be satisfying to contemplate the idea of a Congress without the presence of the radical right-wing extremist Butthead lookalike, the fact that Florida’s Republican governor Ron Desantis, another sycophantic Trump supporter, would be appointing his replacement unit the next election is held should dampen the enthusiasm for Gatez’s rapid exit from the House, since any replacement would likely be just as bad or even worse than the DUI-prone congressman.

As long as the GOP remains in the minority, Gaetz remains a loudmouthed, but impotent, irritant to the democratic process, while who knows what damage he could inflict unsupervised as a private citizen.

Sometimes the devil you know is the better option.
