The Trump years revealed a lot of dirty secrets about the Republican Party that its leaders would have much rather left hidden. It’s now undeniable that white nationalism and bigotry—long denied by conservatives to be animating forces within the GOP—are the heart of the appeal of the party for many, perhaps even a plurality, of its voters.
Equally undeniable now is the fact that the most prominent elected officials in the party, many of whom hope to one day become president, are utter cowards willing to overlook the destructive forces at the core of the Republican Party in their cynical pursuit of power. They failed to hold Trump accountable after all of his hateful rhetoric, failed to do so even after he incited an insurrection that resulted in deaths and injury. These men and women will never stand up for this country if they think it will negatively impact their political future within the GOP, a reality that the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump is already proving.
Today, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), a man who loves to tweet but never backs up any of his bold words with actions, took to Twitter to call the Capitol insurrection “far more dangerous than most realize.” He then immediately undermined his message by insisting that we use the criminal justice system to address it, implying that impeachment is the wrong way to hold Trump accountable. Once again, we see “Little Marco” failing to conjure up even a scrap of courage when it comes to Trump.
One cannot simultaneously believe that the insurrection that Trump fomented was “far more dangerous than most realize” and also that the proper Constitutional avenues shouldn’t be pursued to mete out justice. Rubio wants to have his cake and eat it too: pretend that he cares about what happened on January 6th while also doing nothing about it.
The 6 Jan attack on the Capitol was far more dangerous than most realize
And we have a criminal justice system in place to address it

The View’s Ana Navarro, a Republican who has long been an outspoken critic of Trump and his enablers, photoshopped Rubio’s tweet to mock his spinelessness and shared it with the caption “Fixed it.” It’s exactly as much respect as the senator deserves at this point and if more people were willing to call him out for his mealymouthed rubbish he might actually be forced to transform into something closer to an actual public servant.
