With infuriating inevitability, the second impeachment trial of Donald J. Trump ended this weekend with the majority of Republicans voting to acquit him yet again, despite the mountain of evidence that the Democrats had assembled to prove his guilt.
Fresh off their victory, the pro-Trump forces in the media are rushing to find someone else to blame for the uncomfortable and unavoidable subject of the January 6th storming of Capitol Hill by a rabid mob of Trump supporters — and predictably, they’ve decided it’s the fault of the Democrats. The problem, according to Republicans, was that Capitol police were entirely unprepared for the Trump-incited outbreak of mass insanity on January 6th, and are now trying to concoct a new conspiracy theory that places responsibility for Capitol security on Democratic leadership.
A FOX News guest, Steve Duffy proposed the preposterous idea that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) should face impeachment if it comes out that she knew more than “she was letting on” and baselessly insinuated that Pelosi deliberately had a direct role in leaving the Capitol Hill police unprepared for the riot:
“What did Nancy Pelosi know and when did she know it…Nancy probably knew more than she’s letting on and is trying to play politics as a distraction so the questions aren’t asked” said Duffy.
The host, Harris Faulkner, took that ridiculous accusation one step further: “If she had intelligence or some information before the riots and that was not conveyed — because we know the Capitol Hill police potentially knew a few things — if that was not conveyed to the people who could have protected all of them…Like, if she played a role in not getting what they needed there, what should happen…I’m just curious…If it comes out, do other people start to get impeached now? I’m not being facetious. I want to know who knew about this leading up? Could there be seven people still alive today? That’s a fair question.”
Just asking fair questions here, folks! She’s definitely not trying to shunt the blame for the disruption of the peaceful transfer of power by a mob of goons told specifically to go to the Capitol building by the President of the United States on to one of the people whose offices were invaded by the rioters!
While this kind of ridiculous passing-the-buck and blaming the other side stuff is all we can expect from the right-wing for the foreseeable future, it is still breathtaking to see how easily a FOX News host goes right to the most extreme option and employing the same kind of divisive and inciting rhetoric that sparked the Jan. 6th attack in the first place!
Shame on all of them.
