Ted Cruz cynically exploits his kids to shield himself from blame over Cancun vacation scandal
As a climate-change-exacerbated extreme weather event dumps more snow on the lower 48 states than has been seen in nearly 20 years, the state of Texas is reeling as its privatized, deregulated, and long-neglected for-profit power grid collapses under the strain. Millions of people have been left without power and running water for days while at least two dozen people have died. Grocery stores are empty as food shortages mount. It’s a humanitarian disaster on every level and one would expect fast, decisive action by the elected officials of Texas.

After setting off widespread outrage with his infuriating selfishness, the despised U.S. Senator quickly turned around and headed back to Texas, offering this tepid and condescending excuse for his unforgivable lack of consideration for his voters:

Straight up admitting that he spirited his family away from a natural disaster, the man who last month helped incite the riot on Capitol Hill tried to argue that he had flown all the way to Mexico just to accompany his daughters and to be a “good dad.”

There’s a lot to break down here. First off, the idea that he was simply being there for his children is completely laughable. Last time we checked, his wife is perfectly capable of taking their kids on a trip by himself. Secondly, spending the resources on a frivolous flight during the middle of a disaster is almost as offensive as trying to sneak off for a vacation in the first place!
On top of that, his sudden concern for his family rings a tad hollow when you remember that he cravenly sat by and said nothing as Donald Trump publicly disparaged his wife. To use his kids now as a shield for his appalling lack of consideration for anyone else in his state is just the kind of cowardice we expect from a scum-sucking bootlicker like Ted Cruz.
For all those on the right arguing that Ted Cruz is a Senate-level official and couldn’t do much on his own, NY Times columnist Jamelle Bouie reminded us all that couldn’t be further from the truth.

While Ted Cruz is well-known for being a monstrously selfish and unfeeling sociopath who will say and do anything he can to further his ambitions, this display of privelege is so astonishingly on-the-nose cruel and dismissive it really makes the head spin.
Sadly, it is what we can come to expect from the architects and enablers of the looming ecological apocalypse; the wealthy will board their jets and escape to unaffected areas while ordinary folks are left to drown, burn, starve, freeze, or whatever form of torment a raging Gaia has unleashed on her abusive caretakers.
