The list of differences between the Trump and Biden administrations is long and ever-growing, much to the relief of the American people and the world at large. Nowhere is the stark contrast between the two men more evident than in their approaches to immigration policy.
Trump weaponized xenophobia and came to power by fearmongering about Mexican “rapists,” built his entire asinine pitch to voters on the idea of building a border wall, and separated families at the border in an attempt to deter future migrants from crossing into the United States in search of a better life. It was an approach aimed at maximizing the cruelty inflicted on nonwhite people to pander to racist white voters.
After taking power, Biden immediately ordered the government to reunite the separated families and is working to provide a path to citizenship for the millions of Dreamers betrayed by the Trump administration. Where Trump wielded hatred, Biden is looking to build compassion. True to bigoted form, Republicans are already lobbing criticisms at Biden that he is being “too soft” on immigration as if there’s something wrong with treating human beings with dignity and respect.
Today, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked about Biden’s immigration policy.
“A lot of Americans are saying that you know the surges are happening under President Biden’s watch after he reversed some previous policies so does the administration take any accountability for what’s happening?” asked a reporter, using that same rhetorical technique employed by Trump wherein a vague group of “many people” or “a lot of Americans” are referenced as a way of giving an opinion more weight.
“Who are the Americans?” asked Psaki, refusing to accept the conceit at face value.
“Well, I know you don’t want to answer to him but the former president just released a statement saying that ‘The Biden administration must act immediately to end the border nightmare that they have unleashed on our nation,” responded the reporter.
“Former President Trump?” asked Psaki with some disbelief.
“Yes,” the reporter said.
“We don’t take our advice or counsel from former President Trump on immigration policy which was not only inhumane but ineffective over the past four years,” said Psaki, giving Trump as little respect as he deserves. “We’re going to chart our own path forward and that includes treating children with humanity and respect and ensuring they’re safe when they cross our borders,” she added.
Once again, Psaki has shown what a great choice she was for this position. She refuses to engage in the bad faith questions often lobbed at her and knows exactly how to cut to the heart of any given issue. There is absolutely no reason why the Biden administration should be asked about Trump’s opinions on anything. The man was a disaster of historic proportions and has no idea what he’s talking about when it comes to governing.
