Marjorie Taylor Greene slammed for failing to read the text of a bill before railing against it

When the Republican Party sends its representatives to Congress, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.

Oh wait, that’s what Donald Trump said about Mexican immigrants back at the start of his 2016 presidential campaign.

Still, there’s little doubt that the quality of the candidates that the GOP has put up for office in recent years would make Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt abandon the party in shame.

Take the latest Trumpian poster child for the QAnon faction of right-wing extremists that have somehow managed to get themselves elected to Congress.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) may come across as radical, delusional, and ill-informed, but, as a recent social media post that Greene authored demonstrates, she is actually much stupider and lazier than even her most fervent detractors accuse her of being.

Rep. Greene, an NRA-loving gun-nut of the highest order, tweeted out a warning to her like-minded constituency, advising them of the dangers contained in two House resolutions concerning gun regulations that are currently up for debate.

Unfortunately, Greene apparently didn’t take the time to read through the text of the bills she was railing against, as her mischaracterization of one bill as establishing a “National Gun Registry” completely ignores the fact that the actual content of the bill specifically states on page five that “Nothing in this Act, or any amendment made by this Act, shall be construed to authorize the establishment, directly or indirectly, of a national firearms registry.”

With Greene claiming that “We all know that gun registration leads to gun confiscation,” her leap of the imagination here is about as valid as her belief in the QAnon conspiracy theories that she has made a centerpiece of her congressional persona.

Igor Volsky, the Executive Director of Guns Down America, saw Rep. Greene’s post and immediately pointed out her complete mischaracterization of the contents of the bills she opposes.

Perhaps it is unfair to attribute Congresswoman Greene’s misinterpretation of these bills to stupidity or lack of a close reading of the bills themselves, despite the fact that, having been stripped of her committee assignments because of her many deplorable actions and statements on social media, she would have plenty of time to examine any pending legislation in great detail.

Perhaps, rather than any intellectual shortcomings, Greene is making these statements while fully aware of their falsity and is simply cynically ignoring the truth in an intentional and malicious attempt to further her own harmful agenda.

Whatever the reasoning behind her statements, however, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s failure to understand the meaning of the words “well regulated” in the Second Amendment means that her senseless opposition to meaningful gun regulation reforms will likely be bleated out to the American populace by a media too obsessed with the remnants of Trumpism to do the right thing and ignore her.

With the nation on lockdown and schools mostly closed during the past year due to COVID, school shootings have mercifully faded into distant memories for many people. With schools set to reopen as more Americans are vaccinated, however, only the passage of new regulations can prevent a deadly recurrence of that deadly trend and make our children safe again.

Call your Congressperson and urge them to vote for whatever Marjorie Taylor Greene urges others to vote against.
