Trump strangely claims that he held many meetings in the Oval Office about “dogs”
Donald Trump has a dog problem. Not only was he was the first president in a century to not have a dog while in the White House, he frequently uses the word “dog” as an insult. Often he will say that someone was “fired like a dog,” a bizarre rhetorical habit that seems to imply the existence of a massive secret world of dog employment where they are regularly terminated for unsatisfactory job performance. The use of the word dog in this manner is part of a strategy to dehumanize those he dislikes but it also implies a dislike for dogs themselves.
With the former president’s noted antipathy for man’s best friend in mind, the news that his daughter-in-law Lara Trump has been funneling money from a dog rescue organization to the disgraced former president takes on a particularly distasteful hue. The Big Dog Ranch Rescue has spent over $1.8 million throwing events at Trump properties since 2014. Lara Trump has been an official chairwoman for the group since 2018.
The organization spent at least $225,000 at Mar-a-Lago this past weekend and Donald Trump himself was present, resulting in a truly weird clip of him talking about canines. Surrounded by the rich, white sycophants that constitute much of his supporter base, Trump said that it’s great to “help dogs” and then hinted that Lara might run for Senate because apparently, the Trump family is a virulent strain of virus that we just can’t seem to excise from our body politic.

The former president went on to say he “had many meetings in the White House and the Oval Office having to do with saving and helping dogs,” a truly strange statement of the intentionally vague sort that Trump regularly employs. In the same vein, he said that he heard things about animal cruelty at these alleged meetings that he “never even would think is possible.” He then rambled a bit more and walked off the stage.
The entire performance was deeply odd, he clearly had no idea what he was talking about, and presumably only approached the microphone because he misses the constant attention he got as president. How far this man has fallen, from running the most powerful nation in the world to mumbling incoherently about dogs on a stage in Florida.
