Now that Donald Trump has been forced out of the limelight with his removal from office and subsequent banning from Twitter and Facebook, the Republican Party is trying to convince voters that it actually cares about the so-called principles that it happily ignored for four years. Faux moral outrage has come roaring back with a vengeance and the same people who embraced a liar, criminal, accused rapist, and known philanderer as their chieftain are now insisting that they stand for “family values.”
A target for their criticisms in recent days has been the much-lauded performance by rappers Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion at the Grammy Awards this past weekend. The two megastars put on a blockbuster show, complete with incredible set design, showmanship, and yes more than a little bit of raunchiness. It was completely harmless fun but conservatives want us to believe that it represents nothing less than the nadir of western civilization.
Fox News’s Harris Faulkner felt compelled to discuss the criticism of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion that supposedly “lit up” social media. According to Faulker, “some say” the performance would have “looked more at home in a strip club than a primetime show.” Just like Trump when he alludes to “many people” she failed to cite anyone specifically who made the strip club comparison, instead relying on a vague allusion to social media. It’s a common rhetorical tactic for the right. When they want to manufacture consent behind an opinion, they pretend as if a vast swath of people already hold it.
Faulkner then cut to a clip of Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens—two of the most bad faith hacks currently working in the fetid swamp that is right-wing media—who agreed that Hollywood and liberals are trying to “degrade our culture and hurt our children.” Both Carlson and Owens were big supporters of Donald Trump because apparently being a serial sexual predator is totally fine but dancing in skimpy clothing is not.
Both Carlson and Faulkner’s guest brought up the 1942 film Dumbo, whining that the Disney elephant character is no longer considered appropriate by the “woke mob” but this particular Grammy performance is. They were referring to a recent decision by Disney to remove Dumbo from child profiles on their streaming service because it contains some racially offensive content, in particular, a scene where a crow named “Jim Crow” leads several other crows in a song that leans into racial stereotypes.
By making it a little less likely that children will stumble onto the problematic scene, Disney is simply granting parents more control over what their children consume. It’s a completely benign move and the ridiculous conservative impulse to get angry about it is the same one we saw rear its head when Hasbro made changes to Potato Head and when it was announced that some Dr. Seuss books containing racist imagery would no longer be printed. How can anyone genuinely care about these changes?
Republicans need to take one big collective deep breath and calm down.
