Jen Psaki dismantles “inaccurate” Fox News gotcha question

The right-wing media outlets are desperate to blunt the momentum of the Biden administration. The new Democratic president is incredibly popular and has already succeeded in doing far more for the American people than Trump by passing a historic $1.9 trillion relief bill. His handling of the pandemic has been nothing less masterful and the country is on the fast track to recovery. Recognizing this, the right-wing propaganda machine has been spinning for weeks in an attempt to drum up a scandal about the Mexican border.

Fox News has been running breathless coverage about the influx of migrants at the border in an attempt to convince its voters that Biden’s immigration policies are a “disaster.” Donald Trump instituted a policy of codified cruelty, ripping children from their families and caging them in facilities where they were subjected to all manner of horrendous abuse. He spoke about them in the most racist terms imaginable and now Republicans see anything less than that kind of abject evil as weakness. Biden wants these people treated with human dignity and conservatives simply cannot stand it.

Today, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki fielded the umpteenth question about the border from Fox’s Peter Doocy, a man who goes fishing for a gotcha moment just about every time Psaki steps up to the podium. He claimed that Border Patrol agents are “letting adult migrants go without even issuing notices to appear” and asked if the Biden administration is now relying on the “honor system,” as loaded, condescending a question as one can imagine.

Add your name to call on prosecutors to ARREST DONALD TRUMP for his crimes!

“That is an inaccurate depiction of what’s happening at the border,” said Psaki, immediately shutting down the reactionary mischaracterization.

“So there’s no change in policy,” Psaki went on. “The border remains closed. Families and single adults are being expelled under Title 42 and should not attempt to cross illegally. In the narrow, narrow circumstances in which a family can’t be expelled the family is tested and quarantined as needed and placed in immigration proceedings to commence.”

“In some cases, families are placed in removal proceedings further along in the release process,” she explained. “So if families are going to be deported and they’re awaiting deportation they don’t need a court date and they don’t need a notice to appear because it has already been determined that they will be sent back to their home countries. Sometimes that takes a minute to ensure there is proper transportation and steps in place to do that.”

Explaining the process in full was a great way to shut down Doocy but rest assured he’ll be back again trying to peddle his border crisis narrative. The Republicans have nothing else to sell at this point.
