Trump reignites his nasty feud with McConnell with a broadside in new interview
In a new interview on The Truth with Lisa Boothe podcast, disgraced former president Donald Trump reignited his feud with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). While the two proved to be stalwart ideological partners while Trump was in office, working together to cram the judiciary full of far-right lunatics and to pass a massive tax cut for the super-rich, they’ve since had a much-publicized falling out.
After Trump incited the deadly January 6th Capitol insurrection, McConnell voted to acquit him in his impeachment trial but ultimately condemned him for his role in the infamous incident, decrying him for his “disgraceful dereliction of duty.” Trump hit back as expected, questioning McConnell’s leadership and calling him a “dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack.” Apparently, Trump also wanted to attack McConnell’s physical appearance but was convinced out of it by his aides.
In the new interview, Trump said that he believes the Republican Party needs “better leadership than Mitch McConnell and stronger leadership.” He happens to be right, but not for the reasons he means. The GOP needs a leader who isn’t afraid to stand up to the increasingly conspiracy theory-poisoned segment of their base, who will work against the authoritarian takeover of the party, and fight to root out the MAGA movement completely. A stronger and better leader by those metrics would be even more despised by Trump but better for American democracy.
Trump went on to criticize McConnell’s lack of control over his Senate caucus.
“I mean, he can’t rein in his own people. We have the Mitt Romneys of the world and, you know, the Ben Sasses of the world. These are not good for the Republican Party,” said Trump, zeroing in on the Republican senators who have spoken out against him in the past.

The ex-president stated that he has no interest in talking to McConnell and said that if Democrats remove the filibuster it would break McConnell’s power. He urged Republicans to simply “not show up” if Democrats push to vote on changing the filibuster.
At this point, it seems unlikely that McConnell will be taking advice from one of the few presidents in history who couldn’t win a second term. That said, these two odious men deserve each other. Few have done as much as they to damage American democracy and if they have to spend the rest of their lives locked in a petty, intraparty feud it’s better than they deserve.
