Democratic lawmaker says she received a weird voicemail from Gaetz and an accused sex trafficker

Rep. Matt Gaetz is holding onto his career by a thread. By now, just about everyone in the civilized world knows that the DOJ is investigating the Florida Republican for the possible sex trafficking of a 16-year-old girl. Gaetz insists he is innocent but his defense—a bizarre, confusing story about how a former Justice Department official is trying to extort money out of him—makes little sense and ultimately just makes him look even guiltier.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has called for a House Ethics Committee investigation into the allegations against Gaetz and his fellow Republicans on the Hill have been airing his dirty laundry—with many of them admitting that they knew it was just a matter of time before he’d be hit with some kind of scandal. He apparently has a well-known reputation for being fond of booze, illegal drugs, and “younger women.” In short, he is exactly the kind of man who would find himself embroiled in a sex trafficking scandal.
As the old cliche goes, when it rains it pours, and now even more weird stories about everyone’s most reviled MAGA Congressman are emerging. Florida State Rep. Anna Eskamani (D) took to Twitter yesterday to recount a strange encounter she had with Gaetz.

On July 4th, 2019 Eskamani says she received a phone call from Joel Greenberg, a then-GOP official who has since fallen into disgrace, resigned, and been charged with child sex trafficking. At the time, Eskamani had recently criticized Greenberg for making Islamophobic comments.

Greenberg, who was of a different political party obviously, also oddly tried sending unsolicited donations to Eskamani’s campaign. He pressured her to meet with him and when he arrived, Eskamani believes he was high on some kind of drug.

Then on July 4th, she received a call from Greenberg but didn’t pick up. He left a voicemail and Matt Gaetz—who was a close friend of his—was on the line too. She describes the message as “SO WEIRD,” but decided against going into the details in her Twitter thread.

Eskamani says she hasn’t shared this story publicly before but she knows that many women “go through shit like this,” where they are forced to weather strange, persistent behavior from men. Hopefully, Eskamani coming forward will encourage other women to do the same. These men must be shamed and held accountable for their actions and women should not be subjected to the unrequited attention of creepy men.
He pushed me to have lunch with him after he kinda/sorta apologized. I picked a very public place to meet in HD47 — it was the weirdest meeting I’ve ever had and I’m pretty sure he was high the entire time too.

On July 4, 2019 he called me and I didn’t pick up (again, I barely talked to him). He left a voicemail and it wasn’t just him, he was with Matt Gaetz too! I shared the voicemail with a few different people because again, it was SO WEIRD and I didn’t realize they were friends.
