Joe Biden’s presidency thus far has been such an unmitigated success that Republicans have been struggling to find a coherent line of attack on his White House. At the same time, the news media is largely starved for content. There are no scandals to report on, which is why we get so much inane coverage of Biden’s dogs and breathless footage of the border.
As a result of the controversy dearth, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki finds herself fielding some truly ridiculous questions on most days and has repeatedly displayed an adeptness for dismantling and dismissing them. Today, she was asked “what message” is being sent if Biden spends Easter with his family members—all of whom have been vaccinated—while asking Americans to “not have gathering until Fourth of July.” The reporter asked for Psaki to “clarify” how big family gatherings can be.
The question was as bad faith as they come. Spending Easter with your vaccinated family isn’t the same as throwing a massive party with your friends and extended family. Biden has never said that people should avoid complete contact with their families. As usual, Psaki didn’t miss a step in responding.
“Well I don’t have a specific number of family members but I can assure you that the president strives to be a role model in every aspect of how he’s living in this difficult time we’re all going through,” said Psaki. “He obviously has a wife he has been married to for some time and a couple of grandkids he sees when he goes to Delaware. But it’s a limited group and certainly not the big Irish Biden clan that many of you have seen throughout his time in public office.”
Biden has chosen some truly great staff members, but Psaki is a cut above. She is perfect for this job and will surely continue to deflect these kind of pointless questions so that the president can continue to focus on accomplishing the work of the American people. What a welcome change of pace this is from the Trump years.
