The nation’s eyes are trained squarely on the state of Georgia and its brazen attempts to strip voting rights from its Black voters — and Republicans are furious over having to face consequences for their actions.
Major League Baseball is the latest corporate behemoth to punish the state, moving its famous All-Star game out of Atlanta and provoking the predictable weeping and moaning from conservatives about how they’re being discriminated against and how cancel culture is running amok.
Disgraced ex-President Donald Trump issued a public meltdown on Friday night, calling on his supporters to boycott baseball (yeah right) and threatened other “woke” corporations who might follow suit.
“Baseball is already losing tremendous numbers of fans, and now they leave Atlanta with their All-Star Game because they are afraid of the Radical Left Democrats who do not want voter I.D., which is desperately needed, to have anything to do with our elections. Boycott baseball, and all of the woke companies that are interfering with Free and Fair Elections. Are you listening Coke, Delta, and all!” wrote Trump.
It is horrifyingly dystopian to see Trump and the rest of the GOP pretend that the backlash to these wildly racist and undemocratic restrictions is an attack on democracy in and of itself. Republicans and their supporters have made it extremely clear that they want to turn American democracy into a fascist autocracy and aren’t even bothering to hide it anymore.
That is why it is imperative that we nuke the filibuster and protect our voting rights with the Democrats’ “For The People Act,” because if we don’t, we might never have the chance to do so again. Republicans are openly trying to rig the game — and it’s time we fight fire with fire.
