Republican leadership indicates they’ll throw Matt Gaetz under the bus

If the Department of Justice’s investigation into Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) for the possible sex trafficking of a 17-year-old girl pans out the way many of us now expect it will, Congress could finally be rid of one of its most odious MAGA creatures. What we know about the man doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in his innocence.

We know Gaetz is a huge fan of Donald Trump, an avowed sexual predator. We know his former friend and “wingman” has already been indicted for a slew of crimes including sex trafficking and there are rumblings he might strike a plea deal and throw Gaetz under the bus. We know there have always been “weird rumors” about the Florida Congressman. We know he has a reputation for loving booze, illegal drugs, and “younger women.” And now we know what could happen if the DOJ files charges against him.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), as diehard a partisan as they come and the second-ranking Republican in the House, told reporters today that Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, will “take action” against Gaetz if “formal” charges are brought against him in the sex trafficking investigation.

The comments were prompted when a reporter asked if Scalise has “confidence” in Gaetz.

“Well, you know we’ve heard a lot of stories,” responded Scalie. “I mean obviously I’ve read the media reports but there’s been nothing that we’ve seen yet from the Department of Justice. If something’s going on obviously we’ll find out about it. Right now it’s hard to speculate on rumors but if something really formal happened from Justice, we would of course react and take action.”

Given the way in which Republican officials closed ranks around Trump and refused to impeach and remove him from office even after he incited a deadly insurrection at the capitol, it’s difficult to take Scalise at his word. Republicans have a terrible track record when it comes to holding their own accountable but hopefully the Gaetz scandal becomes so undeniable that they’re forced to take action against him. If these allegations are true he doesn’t belong in Congress, he belongs in prison.
