Maxine Waters tells Jim Jordan to “shut his mouth” in heated Congressional hearing

While the number of Americans who have received their full doses of the COVID-19 vaccine increases every day now that the Biden administration has taken over the coordination of the federal efforts, the impatience of some people with the health restrictions in place during the pandemic seems to only be getting worse.

Many people are happy to comply with regulations requiring face masks to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus knowing that their actions will be beneficial to both themselves and to society at large, but others seem to be unable to see past their own inconvenience and discomfort and fight vociferously against what they see as a restriction on their personal freedoms rather than as a vital contribution to the good of society as a whole.

Count Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) among those in the latter camp.

In a hearing today of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, Rep. Jordan attacked Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to President Biden, for continuing to urge Americans to wear masks and maintain social distancing until the metrics of virus transmission demonstrate that the danger of an ever-growing pandemic is over.

Congressman Jordan is apparently tired of wearing masks and pushed Dr. Fauci to give him an answer as to when we can all stop being forced to wear that fabric over our mouths and noses.

Dr. Fauci astutely pointed out that it all depends on the success of the vaccine rollout which is still facing some skepticism from conspiracy-minded anti-vaxxers.

“My message, Congressman Jordan, is to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as we possibly can to get the level of infection in this country low so that it is no longer a threat,” Fauci explained.

That answer just wasn’t good enough for the right-wing former wrestling coach. He pressed Dr. Fauci for a more specific estimate as to when Americans could be able to retrieve their “liberty and freedom” from the responsibility of wearing masks.

For Dr. Fauci, Rep. Jordan’s question demonstrated a skewed perspective on the entire issue.

“You’re indicating liberty and freedom, I look at it as a public health measure to prevent people from dying and going to the hospital,” Fauci responded to Jordan’s question, indicating that freedom isn’t worth very much if one is not alive to enjoy it.

Representative Jordan exploded angrily at the nation’s chief epidemiologist’s scientifically valid reply.

“You don’t think Americans’ liberties have been threatened in the last year, Dr. Fauci?!”  Rep. Jordan reacted. “They’ve been assaulted!”

Dr. Fauci replied in the best way that he knew how — by simply repeating the scientific truth.

“This will end for sure when we get the level of infection very low,” he responded.

Jordan’s angry outburst towards Dr. Fauci earned him a rebuke from Committee Chair Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA).

Let’s hope that for America’s sake that Congressman Jordan follows Rep. Maxine Water’s advice.
