Jen Psaki schools reporter for probing about Biden’s diplomatic trips

Thanks to the steady hands of the Biden administration, the United States appears to be on the fast track to a full recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of Americans vaccinated is rising rapidly and a sense that we may soon be able to return to a semblance of normalcy is in the air. That said, it’s crucial at this stage that we don’t become lax in our health precautions. Masks are still integral to stopping the spread of the virus and until the population is fully vaccinated social distancing is advisable.

The White House has still not signaled to Americans that they should resume plans to travel abroad, a wise hesitance given the spiking number of coronavirus cases in other parts of the world. During today’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins about Biden’s planned diplomatic trip to Europe and if everyday Americans will soon be able to start traveling as well.

“Well, I would say that I think most Americans would see it as slightly different from the President of the United States — I’m not suggesting you’re saying otherwise — but as the President of the United States making a diplomatic trip, abiding by COVID protocols, and flying on Air Force One than whether it is safe for mass numbers to fly internationally,” said Psaki.

“Obviously, everybody wants that to be reopened. Europeans, we do, American people who would like to travel but you know those conversations are really happening between health and medical experts, and they will make an evaluation based on what they think is safe for the American public,” Psaki added.

As usual, Psaki’s explanation was thorough and articulate. There is a world of difference between President Biden (who has been fully vaccinated) traveling to handle affairs of state and droves of Americans flocking overseas for vacations. The rest of us will just have to wait a little while longer.

In the meantime, Biden will be heading to Europe in June for his first visit as president to take part in international conferences, including a NATO Summit. In doing so, he will be taking crucial steps towards rebuilding the foreign relationships and alliances that Donald Trump so casually shredded.
