Last night, President Biden gave his first address to the United States Congress, laying out a refreshingly progressive vision for a more equitable America and taking a victory lap for his accomplishments in the fight against COVID-19. Vice-President Harris and Nancy Pelosi made history by being the first two women to flank the President as he spoke to our elected representatives. His speech starkly contrasted with those of his predecessor Donald Trump, as it was neither full of easily debunked lies nor open white supremacist propaganda bolstering a dystopian fantasy of “American carnage.”
That much was not lost on the former President, who joined FOX’s Maria Bartiromo this morning to inevitably complain about what he had seen the night before. His internalized misogyny inevitably kicked into high gear and focused his angst on the two women next to President Biden, claiming that they looked like they were “choking” from wearing masks that were too big:
Former President Trump swiping at Pelosi/Harris wearing masks on Fox Business: "It looked like they were choking last night while he was speaking. I watched and I said, they ought to get some air. Nancy's mask was the biggest mask I think I've ever seen… They love those masks."

He wasn’t the only one to focus on the mask-wearing; the disgraceful bastion of Islamophobia and slut-shaming known as the NY Post whined that last night saw ” utterly bizarre “mask theater” and that “all the politicians in the room have been fully vaccinated, and Biden’s own CDC says that’s enough. So why the universal masking, and the social distancing? The message, cutting across the president’s occasional optimism, was that this nightmare will never end — which simply isn’t true.”
The United States is still averaging around 50,000 new coronavirus cases a day and the death toll slowly creeps towards 600,000. While we know that American conservatives have long ago decided to pretend that the pandemic was over and normal life could immediately resume without any consideration for what doctors or science had to say on the matter, that doesn’t mean the rest of us are entirely ignorant of reality — or willing to sacrifice the lives of their neighbors just so you can eat inside at Applebees.
It’s been hard enough getting people to wear a mask and to get vaccinated in the first place, thanks to all the misinformation deliberately promoted by Trump and his cronies in the media. Complaining about responsible mask use is about as bottom of the barrel that you can get, and if that’s going to be the big line coming out of Trumpland this week, then it just goes to show how little room they have to stand on — and they know it!
