Trump issues nasty, gloating statement in response to Liz Cheney ouster

On Wednesday morning, Congressional Republicans voted to strip Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) of her leadership position as the No. 3 Republican, conference chair, over her refusal to accept Donald Trump’s twisted version of the 2020 election. While there will be no tears shed to see the vicious warmonger be sent packing, it does not bode well for the future of American politics to see the Republican Party taking such drastic action to punish their own members for refusing to promote a baseless conspiracy that directly seeks to overturn the will of the American people and dismantle our democracy as we know it.

A gloating and spiteful Trump issued a statement on the ousting almost immediately after the fact, trashing Rep. Cheney as a “bitter and horrible human being” with “no personality or anything good to do with the politics of our country” and predicted she would soon find her place as a guest on one of the ostensibly liberal news networks that cannot stop hiring the GOP’s castoffs.

Leaving the petty insults aside, the fact of the matter is that he’s honestly not wrong about a lot of this.

Liz Cheney is just as much a radical extremist as the rest of the GOP caucus, willing to say and do almost anything to advance her party’s agenda. During the early stages of the 2020 election campaign, when she was enthusiastically supporting Trump, Cheney derided the Democratic Party as “the party of anti-Semitism, the party of infanticide, the party of socialism,” and falsely accused Democrats of having “passed legislation that’s violated the First Amendment, the Second Amendment.” Days before the election, she said Vice-President Kamala Harris “sounds like Karl Marx” for arguing that all Americans should be treated equitably and accused her of supporting infanticide.

Unfortunately, there is little joy to be found in Cheney’s demise, since she inevitably will lose her primary to some MAGA fanatic with all her worst beliefs and refuses to accept the outcome of the 2020 election as legitimate. We are rapidly approaching a reality in which a huge swathe of the country and its political leaders are outright denying reality itself — and God only knows how you can operate a democracy under those conditions. No Democratic electoral victory will ever be seen as legitimate ever again, and that is a serious problem we are entirely unprepared to grapple with.
