Louie Gohmert canonizes Capitol rioters as “political prisoners” in deranged speech

The entire world watched Trump fanatics storm the Capitol on January 6th. These lunatics did it because they were convinced that Joe Biden had stolen the election and that Donald Trump was the rightful president. It didn’t hurt that he was urging them on towards revolution. There was no ambiguity about their intentions and no question about the illegality of their actions.

Now, Republicans are desperately trying to rewrite history. They don’t want to admit that the leader of their party tried to overthrow our democracy, they want you to think that the insurrectionists were just normal Americans out for a stroll. Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) said as much today when he stepped onto the floor of Congress and defended the rioters.

“Joe Biden’s Justice Department is criminalizing political protest, but only political protest by Republicans or conservatives,” said Gohmert. “They’re destroying the lives of American families, they’re weaponizing the events of January 6 to silence Trump-supporting Americans.”

Add your name to demand Congress raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour!

He went on to defend their actions, insisting that “these folks” were reasonably questioning the outcome of the 2020 election. It went downhill from there, as he tried to paint the insurrectionists as victims—presumably because he knows such MAGA devotion will help him get re-elected—and insisted that these people were being treated unfairly. Hopefully, dear reader, you can see how incredibly unhinged his argument is.

“We have in this city political prisoners held hostage by their own government,” said Gohmert without an ounce of irony. “Victims of an unequal system of justice in a country where rioters and looters on the left are let off the hook, even considered heroes while those on the right are considered hardened criminals without any record before a trial can even begin.”

Irony and satire are dead. Republicans will continue to make these absurd statements so long as they hold power.
