Greene gives jaw-dropping speech defending insurrectionists and whining about treatment of Trump

The Republican Party’s campaign to whitewash the events of January 6th continues to pick up steam. Although some GOP officials originally condemned the insurrection and even correctly named Trump as accountable for inciting it, the party as a whole now seems to be moving towards a collective claim that what happened was not in fact an insurrection at all. They know there is no way to honestly defend what happened or explain their refusal to hold Trump accountable for it so instead, they’re attempting to simply rewrite history.

Yesterday, the QAnon Congresswoman, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, stood up on the floor of the House to voice her opposition to Congress commissioning a review of what happened on January 6th. She, like so many other Republicans, would prefer to keep the American people in the dark about the exact details of the insurrection.

“Mr. Speaker I rise in opposition to a commission to study the events of Jan. 6th as well as spending $2 billion in security supplemental,” said Greene. “The question that comes to mind is this: What about all the riots that happened during the summer of 2020 after the death of George Floyd? What about the damage caused to federal buildings, churches, people’s businesses and innocent people that were killed like David Dorn?”

The comparison, though one frequently made in bad faith by conservative, doesn’t stand up to even the most cursory of inspections. There is a yawning gulf of difference between people protesting police brutality and the extrajudicial execution of Black people at the hands of the police and hopped up MAGAheads storming the Capitol building because their authoritarian leader convinced them that democracy itself was being stolen. The former seeks to build a more equitable society, the latter a more authoritarian one.

“Indeed we should have a commission to study the violent BLM and Antifa mobs that have plagued American cities this past summer,” Greene went on after rattling off a long list of damages allegedly inflicted by the protests. “And that’s for the American people, who by the way pay the taxes that fund everything we do here.” She then suggested that funding to police forces be increased, a clear as sign as any that this woman has absolutely no concern for the lives ruined regularly by police violence.

It’s not the first time she’s attacked Black Lives Matter because like many Republican politicians she knows that it’s an easy target for riling up white right-wing voters.

“Also while it’s catch and release for domestic terrorists, Antifa, BLM, the people who breached the Capitol on Jan. 6 are being abused,” said Greene. “Some even being held for 23 hours a day in solitary confinement.” She then pivoted to rambling off a bunch of paranoid right-wing questions before finally returning to her favorite subject: Donald Trump.

“And lastly, when will the witch hunt of Donald J. Trump come to an end and all of those who support him?” she asked, conjuring up that pathetic sense of imagined grievance that constitutes the putrid, beating heart of the MAGA movement.
