Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA)—the crackpot far-right conspiracy theorist who has yet to utter a single sane statement as an elected official—pulled a childish stunt today by releasing a video of herself shredding a letter sent on Tuesday to seven Republican House members which warned them that they had broken the House chamber’s mask mandate.
Like the rest of the Republicans who helped worsen the COVID-19 pandemic by spreading misinformation and railing against masks, Greene knows that this kind of idiotic talking point is red meat to a certain segment of the population. These reactionaries see the simple act of wearing a mask as some kind of existential infringement on their liberty, an overreaching act of tyranny that must be opposed with both barrels. Greene spoke accordingly.
“You can’t discriminate against people simply because they won’t wear a mask,” says Greene in the clip. “Today, I refused to wear a mask on the House floor, and I received a warning from Speaker Pelosi that leads to fines if I continue to refuse to wear a mask.”
“Well, here’s what I think of your warning Speaker Pelosi,” Greene adds as she feeds the letter into the shredder machine before looking right into the camera with a little shrug.
This disgraceful little performance is what passes for governance in the modern Republican Party. They have no interest in actually working to improve the lives of everyday Americans and instead try to distract with petty culture war issues and cheap stunts. Greene clearly thinks little over her voters’ intelligence and if they reelect her they’ll be proving her right.
