Ted Cruz gets torched for slobbering over Russian army advertisement

Yesterday, the chattering trolls, ignoramuses, and racists who constitute the right-wing horde on  Twitter lost their collective mind over a video comparing a Russian military recruiting ad with a U.S. Army recruiting ad.

The Russian clip was the kind of paint-by-numbers ad we regularly see from militaries all around the world, including the United States: athletic men looking tough with guns, uniforms, and physical training. It’s not ineffective, but it’s hardly inspired.

The American clip took a much different approach and included animation with a female soldier talking about being raised by two mothers and growing up with a desire to prove herself and serve her country.

While the Russian video seeks solely to appeal to a certain type of recruit, the American one shows that the U.S. Armed forces are a bastion of liberal ideals, welcoming to anyone who wants to serve their country. Conservatives mocked the latter and praised the former, laboring under the mistaken idea that only one type of person is useful to the military.

The modern battlefield is a complex, multi-layered thing. Yes, the U.S. Army needs traditionally physical warriors to take to the field and hurdle over obstacles. But it also needs a litany of support positions, including everything from cyber-warfare to intelligence to accounting. Regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or disability there is a position in the Army suited for you. Republicans chose to ignore this important reality and instead used the stark contrast between the two videos to heap praise on Russia and whine about their favorite new topic: “wokeness.”

Ted Cruz retweeted the comparison video and said “Holy crap. Perhaps a woke, emasculated military is not the best idea…”

Cruz, who is not a veteran and has not served, has absolutely no idea what a modern American Army needs. His use of the word “emasculated” in particular is telling, as it implies that he thinks there should be no women in the military even though well over a million are currently serving with distinction.

The senator seems to think that a military is only composed of men lugging guns through the mud, an outdated version of warfare rooted in the early 20th century. Of course, what can you expect from a man whose concept of the Army presumably comes entirely from what he’s seen in the movies? And how much do you want to bet that any single female soldier could kick his ass from here to Texas?
