Many Trump supporters, lacking a coherent line of criticism to launch at President Biden, have seized upon rising gas prices as proof that he’s some kind of terrible leader. “The president directly controls gas prices” has long been an assumption made by the politically illiterate but in this case, the idea is particularly preposterous.
We are now moving into the summer, a time when gas prices often rise as people decide to drive more and demand goes up. We are also exiting a pandemic—made worse by Trump’s incompetence and apathy—and people are finally able to travel again. As more and more people are vaccinated (an ongoing success of the Biden administration) they will feel more comfortable going out in public which means they’ll be using their cars more. Obviously, the price of gas will rise.
MAGA voters aren’t the only ones making ignorant points about gas prices though, their glorious leader is now getting in on the action. In a new statement released via his website, Donald Trump spewed the kind of clueless, pernicious rhetoric we long ago came to expect from him.
“With Memorial Day Weekend coming up, tomorrow people start driving in the biggest automobile days of the year,” said Trump. “I’m sorry to say the gasoline prices that you will be confronted with are far higher than they were just a short number of months ago where we had gasoline under $2 a gallon,” added the disgraced former president, conveniently omitting the fact that prices were artificially low during the end of his presidency because the pandemic disincentivized travel.
“Remember as you’re watching the meter tick, and your dollars pile up, how great of a job Donald Trump did as President,” he went on. “Soon Russia and the Middle East will be making a fortune on oil, and you will be saying how good it was to have me as your President. Wasn’t it great to be energy independent, but we are energy independent no more. Shame, shame, shame. Other than that, have a great Memorial Day Weekend!”
As is always the case with this troglodyte, it’s difficult to tell if he’s lying or just clueless. It’s possible that, buried beneath his myriad delusions, Trump actually thinks gas prices have gone up because Biden is doing a poor job as president. It’s also possible he knows there’s absolutely no truth to his statement but is assuming his supporters are too stupid to realize it.
The “other than that” bit is quintessential Trump: taunting, charmless, and rude. Folks, how wonderful is it that this man is no longer our president?
