Donald Trump has long had a reputation for being an incredibly crude man. A large part of his political persona involves coming up with demeaning nicknames for his opponents, behaving far more akin to a dimwitted schoolyard bully than a distinguished statesman. To his supporters, it seems like he’s “just calling it how it is,” to everyone who hasn’t guzzled the MAGA Kool-Aid he just looks like a classless boor.
It turns out this brutish, ignorant behavior isn’t just some act he puts on for the cameras though, and a new book to be published in August entitled “‘Frankly, We Did Win This Election’: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost” reveals some of the harsh language Trump used to describe Joe Biden in private during the 2020 election.
According to author Michael Bender, a journalist for The Wall Street Journal, Trump was infuriated by early polls that showed Biden ahead of him. While in the Oval Office ostensibly for a policy meeting, Trump lost his cool and interrupted the proceedings to angrily ask: “How am I losing in the polls to a mental retard?”
There has been a concerted effort in recent years to expunge the word “retard” from our collective lexicon and Trump’s flippant use of it shows how little empathy he has.
Putting aside the use of this obviously offensive word since it’s hardly surprising coming from Trump (he has been repeatedly accused of using slurs, including the N-word), the idea of Donald Trump—a man who can barely string together a semi-coherent thought—questioning anyone’s intellectual facilities is absurd. Clearly, Trump bought into the smears that were running rampant on the internet during the campaign that claimed Biden was suffering from cognitive decline. This was obviously not the case, as evinced by his debate performance and eventual electoral victory.
Vanity Fair wrote about the book passage in question and also revealed that the book claims Trump was reluctant to attack Biden too harshly in public during the early days of the campaign because he was thoroughly convinced that the Democratic Party intended to swap out Biden for another candidate, another theory that was popular on Twitter for some time.
Trump claimed that the Democrats were going to “realize [Biden is] old, and they’re going to give it to somebody else. They’re going to give it to Hillary, or they’re going to give it to Michelle Obama.” Needless to say, these finely tuned political instincts were not validated in the end.
The new book is to be released on August 10th.
