Cruz sparks outrage for suggesting the Joint Chiefs should be fired for disagreeing with his beliefs
The Republican Party has for decades denied the reality of anthropogenic climate change to the benefit of the fossil fuel companies who bankroll their political campaigns. That said, it’s become increasingly difficult to deny the science in recent years as the effects of our reckless disregard for the planet have accumulated. As a result, some Republicans no longer deny that climate change is happening, they just deny that it’s as dangerous as liberals claim.
It can not be overstated just how dangerous this GOP tactic is. They’d rather lie and push the world closer towards extinction than tell their voters something they don’t want to hear. They’ve politicized science and nothing less than the fate of the human species is on the line.
Today, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) retweeted a video of President Joe Biden telling an assembly of United States Air Force personnel that the Joint Chiefs of Staff have told him that global warming is the “greatest threat facing America.”
Add your name to demand Congress raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour!
Cruz scoffed at the remarks and said that either the “Joint Chiefs need to fired (doubtful)” or “our Commander in Chief is lying.” As is usually the case with Cruz, he is completely distorting the facts (and tellingly he had no problem with the president who called his wife ugly lying every time he opened his mouth).
The simple fact is that Biden is not lying and the Joint Chiefs most certainly should not be fired for stating a truth that Cruz finds objectionable. Despite it being inconvenient to Cruz’s worldview, climate change does indeed present a grave risk to national security.
In addition to it having the capability to wipe out all life on Earth, climate change will almost certainly destabilize international geopolitics. The Pentagon has stated as much numerous times and has released reports showing that climate change will exacerbate “poverty, social tensions, environmental degradation, ineffectual leadership and weak political institutions that threaten stability in a number of countries.”
Biden explained as much in the speech which Cruz so ignorantly chose to mock.
“There will be significant population movements, fights over land, millions of people leaving places because they’re literally sinking below the sea in Indonesia, because of the fights over what is arable land anymore,” explained Biden.
As countries fall apart due to the environmental stressors caused by a changing climate, conflicts will flare up and mass refugee crises will abound. If Cruz—a U.S. senator who claims to care about national security– had so much as glanced at some of the Pentagon’s documents on the topic he’d know that.
But of course Cruz, as devoted a servant of the oil industry as one is likely to find, has a perverse incentive to ignore these facts. Apparently, if he can’t shoot it with a gun wrapped in bacon, Cruz doesn’t see it as a threat. America is less safe for having men like this pulling the levers of power but thankfully, we have public servants like Biden who see the challenges of the coming decades clearly.
Either: (1) our joint chiefs need to be fired (doubtful), or
(2) our Commander in Chief is lying. https://t.co/dvdEfQz95e

Well, since you were in Cancun furing the last demonstration of why global warming is a threat, I get why you’re doubtful.
