Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) has already paid a steep price for refusing to go along with the Republican Party’s attempts to protect former President Donald Trump from accountability for the January 6th insurrection.
Cheney was ousted from her number three position in the House GOP leadership because of her rightful antagonism towards Trump’s deviant behavior, but that hasn’t stopped her from continuing to rail against the insanity that her Republican colleagues are spouting on a daily basis.
After right-wing extremist Congressman Paul Gosar (R-AZ) insisted that Ashli Babbitt, the only insurrectionist killed during the attack on the Capitol Building, had been deliberately executed by a Capitol Police officer who was “lying in wait,” Rep. Cheney couldn’t help but take to Twitter to condemn her fellow Republican.
Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), at House hearing, says Capitol police officer was ‘lying in wait’ for Ashli Babbitt before shooting her. Again says Babbitt was “executed” by police, demands name of officer involved in shooting

On January 6, as the violent mob advanced on the House chamber, I was standing near @RepGosar and helped him open his gas mask. The Capitol Police led us to safety. It is disgusting and despicable to see Gosar lie about that day and smear the men and women who defended us. https://t.co/GKsnekHBKx

Gosar’s demands for the name of the officer who fired the fatal shot — a revelation that would surely endanger the life of the individual by exposing them to death threats from fanatical and violent Trump supporters — seem designed to do nothing more than spread doubt about the legitimacy of the Capitol Police’s efforts to prevent the rioters from entering the Capitol.
This is particularly true since an inquiry into the shooting by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department had already determined earlier this year that the officer who shot Babbitt should not face prosecution given the circumstances of the violent incursion.
The Arizona congressman’s antipathy towards the police who shielded him from harm on that fateful day was further emphasized by his vote — along with 20 other House Republicans — against awarding Congressional Gold Medals to the Capitol Police officers who defended Congress from the people using flag poles, fire extinguishers, bear spray, and other makeshift weapons to try to stop the lawful democratic process of certifying Joe Biden’s electoral victory.
While Gosar and other members of the GOP, in conjunction with their right-wing media partners, continue to try to convince America that they shouldn’t believe what extensive video evidence actually demonstrates quite clearly, Congresswoman Cheney is sticking with her principles and continuing to fight against the suicidal path that her colleagues are pursuing.
“Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar. I will not participate in that,” Cheney vowed in a speech before she was ousted from her leadership position. “I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy.”
If only there were more Republicans like Liz Cheney who weren’t so cowed by Donald Trump as to become frightened puppets parroting his lies.
