The real issue with Donald Trump’s Big Lie that he won the election and Joe Biden only became president through mass voter fraud isn’t that the former president himself believes it, it’s that his entire media apparatus and supporter base now believes it. Every time Trump makes a statement or sends out an email falsely claiming that the election was rigged, another swath of his MAGA movement buys into it.
Fox News has repeatedly flirted with the Big Lie but networks even further to the right, networks like OAN, have fully embraced it. A recent clip going viral on Twitter shows commentator Pearson Sharp on One America News ranting about how the election was stolen from Trump. It panders directly to the delusion by trying to game out how this imagined fraud might happen. The actual answer, of course, is that it didn’t and couldn’t happen so Sharp has to construct an elaborate fantasy where an entire army of Americans covertly worked around the clock to steal the election from Trump.
Sharp raises the “question” of how many people it would take to undermine the election.
“Hundreds? Thousands? Tens of thousands? How many people does it take to carry out a coup against the presidency?” Sharp asks, completely ignoring the fact that not a single shred of evidence for voter fraud has been presented in court by Trump and his lackeys.
“And when all the dust settles from the audit in Arizona and the potential audits in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Wisconsin, what happens to all these people who were responsible for overthrowing the election?” Sharp asks, ignoring that the Arizona audit has provided nothing to the MAGA hopefuls and in fact has been found to be untrustworthy.
“What are the consequences for traitors who meddled with our sacred democratic process and tried to steal power by taking away the voices of the American people? What happens to them?” he went on. “Well in the past, America had a very good solution for dealing with such traitors. Execution.”
The clip speaks for itself.
