Justice came rumbling into Trump Tower today as Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. and New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced fraud and tax crime charges against the Trump Organization and its Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg for what the general counsel for the Manhattan district attorney’s office called “a sweeping and audacious illegal payments scheme.”
The long-anticipated charges failed to indict former President Donald Trump and his family for any of the offenses it details in the charges, although, as journalists pouring over the indictment today pointed out, that situation may only be temporary, judging from a clue buried deep within the fine print of the charges.
The clue is the reference to an “Unindicted Co-conspirator #1” in the indictment as relayed in this Twitter post from Kyle Griffin, a Senior Producer on MSNBC‘s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.
There are references to an "Unindicted Co-conspirator #1."
On or before April 5, 2010, the Trump Corporation, acting through its agent, Unindicted Co-conspirator #1, underreported Allen Weisselberg's taxable income for the tax year 2009. https://t.co/xjEsLlFgr5

The mysterious reference in the charges immediately became the hottest topic on cable news outlets as news anchors remarked on the potential identity of the unnamed co-conspirator, predicting that this “what we will be talking about today, tonight, and tomorrow.”

The mention of “Unindicted Co-conspirator #1” comes on page 13 of the indictment of the Trump Organization and Weisselberg in the context of a charge that:
“On or before April 5, 2010, the Trump Corporation, acting through its agent, Unindicted Co-conspirator #1, underreported Allen Weisselberg’s taxable income for the tax year 2009.”
The precise identity of the unindicted co-conspirator was the subject of much speculation on social media.

MSNBC‘s Ari Melber posted that some sources are claiming that the person being referred to is not Donald Trump.

. @Tom_Winter reports sources saying this is not a reference to Donald Trump, which will be interesting to many.
Any D.A. ref to an unindicted co-coconspirator raises questions about another person who
– could be charged
– or is cooperating— Ari Melber (@AriMelber) July 1, 2021
Others speculated that it could be Trump or one of his children.
but that #1 was active along with the defendants from "March 31, 2005 to on or about June 30, 2021"

The Lincoln Project’s George Conway thought that it could be Trump Organization Controller Jeffrey McConney, while still others speculated that it could refer to the company’s accounting firm, Mazars USA.
Many others simply assumed that the reference couldn’t be anyone else besides Donald Trump himself, already given the monicker of “Individual #1” in the D.A. office’s probe into the illegal payments to Stormy Daniels that helped land former Trump Organization lawyer Michael Cohen in prison.
His own damn fault

Whomever “Unindicted Co-conspirator #1” may be, the details are likely to come out during the upcoming trial for Allen Weisselberg and the Trump Organization.
We’re slowly inching towards the truth and towards justice. Thanks to Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. and New York State Attorney General Letitia James for getting the ball rolling.
