Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made the bold and wise decision today to reject two of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) nominees for the select committee being empaneled to investigate the January 6th insurrection.
The two rejected Republican hatchet men in question, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), would have done everything in their power to waylay the proceedings and shield former president Trump from any negative attention. Jordan, in particular, is one of Trump’s most obsequious toadies and one of the most reliably dishonest members of Congress. Pelosi gave McCarthy suggestions for other Republicans whose nominations to the committee she would accept.
McCarthy in turn released a whiny statement demanding that Pelosi seat his nominees. If she refuses, McCarthy stated that Republicans will not engage in the committee and will instead launch their own investigation into the events of January 6th — an all but tacit admission on his part that the GOP intends to twist the facts of that day to suit their political needs. The very idea of a Republican investigation into a Republican insurrection incited by a Republican president is ludicrous at face value.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), one of the most outspoken voices when it comes to calling out Republican hypocrisy and underhandedness, retweeted McCarthy’s statement on Pelosi’s rejection and mocked the idea of a separate GOP insurrection probe.
“And where does McCarthy plan on doing his ‘own investigation’ into Jan 6th if he’s blocking Republicans from participating in the official Congressional investigation? Parler?” joked AOC, referring to the ramshackle right-wing social media website to which some conservatives have flocked after getting hit with bans from Twitter and Facebook. The website is utterly disreputable and teeming with racists, anti-semites, and numerous other species of bigot. In other words, the people McCarthy serves.
And where does McCarthy plan on doing his “own investigation” into Jan 6th if he’s blocking Republicans from participating in the official Congressional investigation?
