Pelosi shows rare venom in public takedown of “moron” Republican Leader

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is understandably losing all patience with her GOP counterpart House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). The Trump era revealed him to be nothing more than a craven power-chaser willing to sell out his dignity and so-called principles at bargain-basement prices in order to pander to the increasingly unhinged conservative base. Pelosi is clearly fed up with his antics.

McCarthy tried and failed to staff the January 6th select committee with partisan hacks who would have surely waylaid the crucial proceedings. He has no interest in investigating the deadly insurrection because he knows it could lead to deeply damaging press for former president Donald Trump and the broader Republican Party.

Now, McCarthy has begun railing against the Capitol physician’s decision to mandate masks to curb the spread of COVID-19 as the Delta variant leads to alarming spikes in infection across the country. Additionally, the CDC is suggesting that Americans once again wear masks indoors even if they’ve been vaccinated.

Add your name to demand Congress raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour!

“Make no mistake — The threat of bringing masks back is not a decision based on science, but a decision conjured up by liberal government officials who want to continue to live in a perpetual pandemic state,” he tweeted last night.

The grim and ironic reality of McCarthy’s attack on mask mandates is that they wouldn’t be necessary at all if his own party wasn’t filled to the brim with anti-vaccination conspiracy theorists. Republican politicians and Fox News talking heads have enabled these peoples by failing for so long to stake a pro-vaccine stance. Now we’re all paying the price.

Pelosi was asked about McCarthy’s opposition to masks today and bluntly stated that he is “such a moron.” It’s a characterization that he deserves but perhaps obscures the reality a bit. It seems far more likely that McCarthy recognizes that mandates will help save lives, but also knows that voicing support for them will infuriate Republican voters. As usual, he’s chosen the route of the coward.

When asked later if she thinks McCarthy is in fact a moron, Pelosi obliquely doubled down on the idea. Harsh words, but fair. At this point, anyone who doesn’t take the coronavirus pandemic seriously is a moron.
