Alleged sex trafficker Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and deranged conspiracy theorist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA) have not been having a particularly successful week. On Tuesday, they tried to hold a press conference to lament the detainment of January 6th insurrectionists but were disrupted by hecklers— including one who repeatedly blew a whistle—until they eventually just threw in the towel and fled.
Now, the two of them have helped themselves to a second serving of self-humiliation. Gaetz and Greene, accompanied by the truly execrable Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), attempted to gain entry into a facility housing the alleged insurrectionists. Right-wing media outlets OAN and Right Side Broadcasting Network accompanied the representatives so the ridiculous stunt was caught on camera.
Not surprisingly, the authorities running the facility denied Gaetz, Greene, and Gohmert access and locked the door so that they could not force their way in. The lawmakers proceeded to then throw a whiny fit about the perfectly reasonable decision. Gaetz complained that they were the victims of a “bait and switch” because they weren’t granted access.
Greene insisted that they weren’t allowed in because the authorities “don’t want anyone to know what’s happening inside.” What’s happening inside, of course, is the detainment of dangerous insurrectionists who stormed our Capitol building in an attempt to overthrow a legitimate election on behalf of their cult leader Donald Trump. Greene also complained that the individuals running the facility warned them that they were trespassing, which they were.
The authorities would have to be fools to let attention-seeking MAGA maniacs like Gaetz, Greene, and Gohmert in. It’s incredibly telling that they’re going to such great lengths to signal their solidarity with the violent insurrectionists instead of the brave Capitol police who suffered both physical and psychological trauma during the siege.
