Marjorie Taylor Greene’s latest mask stunt in the Capitol draws swift condemnation

It’s no surprise that the Q-inspired, conspiracy theory-loving Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is an anti-vaxxer and an opposer of mask mandates, especially given the behavior that resulted in her being stripped of her committee assignments earlier this year by her own Republican Party.

Since being unceremoniously removed from the day to day legislative business in the House of Representatives, Rep. Greene has plenty of time on her hands, time that she’s dedicated to increasing her already overblown media presence and staging an increasingly escalating series of stunts — often in conjunction with accused pedophile and fellow Trump supporter Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) — like the failed attempt to protest the incarceration of the supposed “patriots” who participated in the ransacking of Congress during the January 6th insurrection.

Greene has also spent a considerable amount of time on building her social media presence in emulation of Donald Trump, so it’s almost preordained that her latest stunt would take the form of a staged video protesting Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s reinstatement of a mask mandate in the House of Representatives after a resurgence of cases due to the spread of the more infectious Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus.

In a Twitter post captioned “COVID Checkpoint Charlie,” Greene stages a scene mocking the differences in mask regulations between the House and the more lackadaisical response to the latest surge in delta variant COVID cases by the Senate which hasn’t renewed any mandated facial coverings.

Standing by a velvet rope and its stanchions, Greene invites two people wearing masks to cross the magical threshold dividing the areas in the Capitol dome under the jurisdiction of the two individual chambers of our nation’s legislative bodies to a space where they can shed their repressive face coverings and live life as free, if spectacularly selfish, potential virus spreaders.

Framing herself as some later-day Moses leading her people to a promised land of personal freedom, Greene’s provocative video only serves to build her image as a right-wing extremist crusader for those MAGA followers who resent having to consider the health of their fellow citizens and be slightly inconvenienced by the act of prophylactic mask usage.

Needless to say, the response to Rep. Greene’s latest escapade was swift and withering.

It’s a sad commentary on the state of America’s political and educational systems that someone like Marjorie Taylor Greene could get elected to Congress to begin with, but her continued prominence as a media figure despite the destructiveness of her message could be a sign of our nation’s decline and fall.

Anyone who believes that she should be expelled from the House of Representatives immediately should call their congressional representatives and tell them to initiate action now.
