Right-wing media follows a formula as it gins up its outrage and fear machine.
If a policy could potentially benefit President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party in any way politically, conservative news outlets begin their propaganda barrage attacking that policy as a demonic attempt at destroying American’s freedoms and put all their muscle behind defeating it.
Even when the policy in question is a bipartisan infrastructure initiative designed to help rebuild our failing roads, bridges, and tunnels and containing numerous other beneficial investments in our nation’s future, since its passage would make the current administration look good, news channels like Fox News designate it as a target at which to take as many potshots as possible.
Unfortunately for Fox News host Laura Ingraham — a woman who has been one of the channel’s most vehement apologists for the prior administration of Donald Trump — her reflexive disdain for the bipartisan infrastructure bill that is wending its way through the U.S. Senate was skewered by a GOP senator appearing on her program last night.
As Ingraham began her interview with Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) the on-screen graphics made Fox News‘s opposition to the proposed compromise bill quite clear.
“Dems using infrastructure bill as a Trojan Horse,” the caption on the screen read, implying unnamed hidden dangers in its provisions.
It didn’t take long for Senator Cassidy to disabuse Ingraham of any notions that the bill wouldn’t actually help improve the lives of the typical Fox News viewer.
“It is the person in my state stuck in traffic, who’s fearful of their home flooding, who wants to have a better job, that actually would like to make more money, but doesn’t make a lot of money now who really likes this bill,” Senator Cassidy insisted.
“I talk to Fox News watchers, they love this bill,” he corrected Ingraham.
Senator Cassidy also presented some perspective on the effect of the bill on the wealthy oligarchs who are generally the primary beneficiaries of any legislation supported by the compliant members of the Republican Party and their media mouthpieces.
“They have chauffeurs, they have private jets, they can fly here or there if it floods. It’s the people who live in their own home who are at risk of flooding that like it,” the Louisiana senator said of the rich GOP fat cats.
It’s good to see at least one Republican Senator who has rejected the siren call of Trumpian divisiveness when it comes to the desperately needed infrastructure investments contained in the bipartisan infrastructure deal.
