Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is a woman known neither for her eloquence, nor her intelligence, nor even her sanity. One thing that she is known for is penning tweets on a near-daily basis that are deranged and conspiratorial even by the standards of the modern Republican Party. Oftentimes they are so genuinely bizarre as to be near incomprehensible. When they are comprehensible they are almost always crude or petty.
Yesterday, Greene attacked the “Communists” Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for turning the East Capitol steps into a “homeless camp.” She accused them of leaving “Dominos pizza boxes, Cheez-Its, and Oreos” everywhere and then demanded that no one in particular “EVICT THEM!”
By now, even a casual observer of American politics should realize that right-wingers like Greene use the word “communist” to describe anyone whose politics they dislike. Think Americans shouldn’t suffer from debilitating medical debt after a hospital visit? Communist! Think the United States should engage in good faith to foster stronger relationships with our international allies? Filthy communist! Think that the Democratic Party is not in fact sacrificing and devouring children? Filthy Godless communist!
The Twitter outburst was prompted by Bush, AOC, and activists occupying the Capitol steps to protest the end of the eviction moratorium. As usual, they were doing the work of the American people, fighting to prevent families financially devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic from being thrown out onto the streets. Greene, who seems to have not one iota of compassion in her body, is predictably uninterested in fighting for these people and would instead attack the representatives advocating for them.
Her demand to “EVICT THEM!” could be read as a call for AOC, Bush, and the rest to be evicted from the Capitol steps but given her odious politics it’s just as likely she was calling for the eviction of innocent Americans unable to pay their rent due to the pandemic. There truly is no bottom with this ogre.
Greene also shared photos of the foodstuffs that so offended her, but they were zoomed-in so drastically it’s impossible to tell if they were taken while the activists were still there or after they left. In either case, she should be far more worried about families losing their homes than she is a little alleged litter.
Many on Twitter were quick to point out that Greene had no such problem with the destruction wrought on the Capitol by the January 6th insurrectionists — presumably because she helped incite the violence by boosting the lie that Trump won the election. In any case, these tweets are an embarrassing display from an elected government official.
