Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy and the rest of GOP leadership have been caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the January 6th commission and getting to the bottom of the most direct threat to our democracy since the British burned the White House in 1814.
They can’t afford to support any investigation, since they would obviously alienate the rabid Trumper base who believe that the January 6th attack on Capitol Hill was a good thing and that the election was stolen from Trump, and instead offer up obviously transparent excuses for opposing it — like complaining that it’s “too political.”
A reporter attempted to get the truth out of Leader McCarthy during today’s visit to Hialeah Gardens, Florida, where he held a press conference pandering to the Floridian Cuban immigrant community. Occupy Democrats‘ own Grant Stern worked his way into the crowd and demanded to know why exactly McCarthy opposed the January 6th commission — and McCarthy’s people had four cops literally drag him out of the room:
I tried to ask @GOPLeader McCarthy a question after he decried Cuban police pickup up people in the streets.
Why does he oppose the bipartisan #January6thCommission?
A Congressional staffer had four cops pick me up and drag me from the room.
I still asked the question. pic.twitter.com/HDqrhvARaC

That should tell you all you need to know about how GOP leader McCarthy feels about the free press — and about how badly he doesn’t want to talk about the insurrection that his caucus helped incite.
