With President Biden poised to pass a historic $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill and perhaps even a voting rights bill in the not-too-distant future, he could very well go down as one of the most significant presidents in generations. Desperate to find something to attack him over, Republicans have latched onto the Afghanistan withdrawal—something which many of them supported on an even faster timeline when Donald Trump suggested it—as a way of smearing Biden as an unmitigated failure.
While there are certainly valid criticisms to be made of some of the details of the Biden administration’s withdrawal, removing American troops from a region where we have been waging war for two decades was always going to be a messy, chaotic affair. Yet conservatives have been pretending as if they could have conducted it immaculately. They’re exploiting the withdrawal, which most Americans support in theory if not in the specifics, for cheap political points.
Some particularly unscrupulous Republicans are even calling for Biden to resign or be impeached over Afghanistan. Last Friday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced resolutions to impeach President Biden.
Greene’s efforts will, of course, fail and given that she supported Donald Trump’s big lie that he won the election and has been clamoring for an excuse to impeach Biden since he was inaugurated, this recent push to remove him has zero credibility. That said, it does demonstrate just how low the GOP has sunk. They have no interest in actually governing and are fixated solely on cheap political stunts.
Earlier today, Donald Trump Jr. decried in a tweet that his father was impeached “over a phone call” and Joe Biden is supposedly getting a free pass over the Afghanistan withdrawal. What the former president’s son failed to mention was that during that phone call, then-President Trump tried to exploit the vast powers of the Oval Office to extract dirt on Biden ahead of the 2020 election. Trump threatened to withhold military aid to Ukraine unless his demands were met. His abuse of his powers as commander-in-chief was a valid reason to impeach. Joe Biden using his powers as commander-in-chief to end a long bloody war is not.
They impeached Trump over a phone call but stranding thousands of Americans in a terrorist controlled country is just fine.

Soon after Don Jr.’s asinine tweet went up, Marjorie Taylor Greene retweeted it and bragged that she introduced Articles of Impeachment against Biden last Friday. She claimed that Republican voters as well as “some Democrats” want the president removed from office over his “betrayal & absolute dereliction of duty.” Like most Republicans making such claims, Greene failed to explain what Biden should have done differently. Her efforts need not be taken too seriously, but they must be condemned. This woman is an utter disgrace to American government.
