A lot of words can be used to accurately describe Donald Trump’s continued refusal to accept that he lost the 2020 election but the most apropos is definitely “pathetic.” This 75-year-old man is so deeply insecure, so overwhelmingly ruled by his own overinflated ego that he insists on conducting himself like a petulant child. Despite a complete failure to produce any evidence for his false claims that mass voter fraud stole the election for Joe Biden, Trump continues to act as if his lies have been somehow vindicated and his credulous supporters lap it up.
In a new interview with right-wing commentator Todd Starnes—a bloodthirsty cryptofascist who recently called for one city in Afghanistan to be “wiped off the face of the Earth” for every American who dies in that region—Trump trotted out some of his usual misinformation about the election.
“They cheated, and you know when people cheat, I always say, ‘If Tiffany gets robbed of its diamonds when they catch the robber, you have to give the diamonds back,'” Trump stated, seemingly implying that President Biden should simply hand him back the presidency.
“So does this mean… They’ve caught them cheating already frankly,” Trump went on. “There’s more stuff and you know it and you cover it well. They have all of this incredible evidence,” the former president said, conveniently failing to describe exactly what kind of alleged evidence he was referring to.
“Does this mean we have to keep the people that cheated for another three-and-a-half years? Because we’re not going to have a country left, I can tell you that. We won’t have a country left,” he added before launching into a screed against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Obviously, there is no world in which President Biden suddenly decides to give control of the Oval Office back to Trump (and he couldn’t even if he wanted to), but Trump’s remarks shouldn’t be dismissed as simply delusional curiosities. These are deeply dangerous remarks and the more he pushes these lies about Biden being an illegitimate president, the more likely it becomes that we could see a repeat of the deadly January 6th insurrection.
The MAGA cult has fully bought into the narrative that our democracy has been stolen and they’ve demonstrated a willingness to use violence to correct this imagined crime. Donald Trump is endangering us all by inciting them and it’s past time the Republican Party grew a collective spine and stood up to him.
