Donald Trump has grown absolutely obsessed with his lie that he won the 2020 election. It seems he can’t give a single interview these days without raising the specter of the debunked mass voter fraud narrative despite his continued inability to produce so much as a scrap of evidence for it. At this point, it’s unlikely he’s going to convince anyone other than the credulous MAGA faithful who long ago accepted his lies so his constant complaints about rigged elections function only to soothe his own bruised ego.
In a new interview with radio host John Fredericks for the far-right outlet Real America’s Voice, Trump once again insisted that he in fact beat Joe Biden and is the rightful President of the United States of America. The interview began with Trump trashing the Biden administration’s successful withdrawal from Afghanistan—with both host and interviewee conveniently ignoring the fact that Trump previously called for an even earlier withdrawal—before launching into a tangled tangent condemning Biden’s border policies.
Inevitably, the conversation progressed to pathetic insistences about 2020 with the former president at one point warning we “may not have a country left” by the time Biden’s presidency is over.
“[President Biden] has a group of smart people that are very devious,” said Trump. “And Republicans, I mean, honestly they don’t cheat or they’re not good at cheating and I’m not asking them to cheat. We want fair elections. But the Democrats cheat on elections.”
“It was a rigged election and I’ll say it loudly and I’ll say it to anybody that—” Trump also said. “You know, they’re trying to silence people with that shit. Uh. I have to speak the truth. I just speak the truth. It’s one of the reasons we won. You know we got them by surprise in 2016 and they said we’ll never let that happen again.”
“And just one thing in leaving: the angriest person there is right now is Hillary Clinton because she told them, ‘Why didn’t you do that for me?'” lied Trump. “Because actually, that was a much closer election. We won this last election in a landslide.”
Trump also slammed Senate Minority Mitch McConnell, the U.S. intelligence agency, the looming bipartisan infrastructure bill, and discussed the possibility of him running in 2024. As to be expected, the former president also spent much of the time stroking his own ego.
