While Democrats negotiate back and forth amongst themselves trying to strike a deal on President Biden’s legislative agenda that will satisfy both progressives and moderates, the Republicans are standing on the sidelines, arms crossed, refusing to work in good faith to find a bipartisan compromise. They don’t care about the myriad ways in which new federal spending would drastically improve the lives of working men and women, they simply can’t stand the thought of handing Biden a major win.
Last night, Speaker Pelosi postponed the vote on the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill so that the Democrats’ negotiation process could continue. Progressives are worried that if they vote yes on this chunk of legislation, centrists within the party will ultimately refuse to vote yes on the much larger $3.5 trillion reconciliation package that addresses issues like climate change, child care, community college, and healthcare expansion.
In the leadup to the necessary postponement last night, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) blasted out a tweet that exemplified just how bad-faith Republicans are acting right now. She framed her tweet as an “offer” to Pelosi that, if met, would compel her to vote yes on the bill. As one might expect, her demands were both insane and insulting.
Greene demanded that the election be decertified, that Trump be somehow magically restored as President of the United States, that Dr. Fauci be fired for some reason (presumably one of the countless conspiracy theories right-wingers have concocted about him), that Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) be expelled from Congress, that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) be investigated (presumably simply because she’s Muslim and an immigrant), that the border wall be built, and that mask/vaccine mandates be ended.
Greene’s tweet might seem like fringe lunacy, but more and more she’s become a fitting avatar for the modern GOP. Much of the Republican base now thinks in the same conspiratorial way. These people are completely divorced from reality and in the case of elected officials like this, are utterly incapable of accomplishing anything for the American people.
