They come from one of the countries that Donald Trump thinks is a shithole.
So it should be no surprise to find that Haitian refugee immigrants aren’t among his favorite people in the world.
Still the racist accusations that the twice-impeached former president aimed at the refugees from the disaster-plagued island nation who massed at the Texas border on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program last night were still shocking nonetheless.
“You know, there’s one other thing that nobody talks about,” Trump began his rant. “So we have hundreds of thousands of people flowing in from Haiti. Haiti has a tremendous AIDS problem. AIDS is a step beyond, AIDS is a real bad problem. So hundreds of thousands of people are coming into our country, and if you look at the stats, if you look at the numbers, if you just take a look at what’s happening in Haiti, a tremendous problem with AIDS, many of those people will probably have AIDS, and they’re coming into our country. And we don’t do anything about it, we let everybody come in! Sean, it’s like a death wish.”
Trump wasn’t content to merely use the threat of further COVID-19 infections among the refugees to frighten his MAGA base.
No, with much of his base seemingly unafraid enough of the coronavirus threat as to forgo life-saving vaccines, he needed another source of fear to motivate them.
AIDS, a disease originally associated with homosexuals and Haitians, but which spread to become a threat to any sexually-active individual, may not yet have an effective vaccine for prevention, but does have drug treatments that make it more of a chronic disease than a life-threatening illness these days.
And safe-sex practices have helped stop transmission of the disease as AIDS awareness has become widespread.
None of these facts stopped Trump from using the affliction as a political cudgel to rally his base to his anti-immigrant message.
