In a world where sensibilities, sensitivities, and social conventions are rapidly changing, it can be hard sometimes to determine what is and isn’t appropriate.
Other times, it is not.
This viral video depicting a Riverside, CA, math teacher at John W. North high school performing an extremely embarrassing mockery of a Native American dance is one of those times.
Copied:
Yesterday a Native American student filmed this video in his Math class. After several minutes of the teacher “war hooping & tomahawk chopping” the student began filming because he, “felt that violence was being committed against him and he had the right to record.” pic.twitter.com/4zvFS6JfPw— Iviviq ᐃᕕᕕᖅ ❄️ (@UrbanInuk) October 21, 2021

Apparently, the teacher was attempting to teach her students the “socatoa” mnemonic device to help them remember the sin, cosine, and tangent mathematical concepts, and somehow chose to perform this absurdly lengthy and offensive dance to hammer her point home.
Join me in a collective “what on earth is this woman doing?”
Judging from the reactions of her students, it’s lucky that they weren’t hospitalized for overexposure to cringe.

I don’t know how, in the year two thousand twenty one, it needs to be explained to white people that mocking the sacred rituals of the indigenous tribes that were genocided by white colonists is not ever appropriate.
