Panicking Republicans accuse Dems of stealing Virginia governor’s race before polls even open

Today is the first Election Day since Donald Trump and the Republican political media machine began their still-ongoing campaign to dispute the results of the 2020 election, and it’s already becoming terrifyingly clear that we might never have an uncontested election again.

Polls hadn’t even opened before the right-wing began calling the significant Virginia governor’s race into question, accusing Democrats of trying to steal it and promoting misinformation fake news stories to lay the foundation of a credible steal conspiracy.

Last night, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich turned FOX pundit Newt Gingrich told FOX’s millions of viewers that it was imperative for Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin to win decisively to prevent a steal: “First of all, if it’s really tight they’ll steal it, so you can’t afford to have a really tight election. You have to win by a big enough margin that they can’t steal it.”

Right-wing hate rag The Federalist breathlessly claimed that Democrats were using the same “election shenanigans” to “steal” Virginia, even though if one actually read the article those “shenanigans” turned out to be… get-out-the-vote-efforts, voter registration drives, and mail-in ballots.

Extremist firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene announced that Democrats were going to do “everything they can” to steal the Virginia Governor’s race during a TV appearance.

The race between Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin for control of the key state of Virginia is largely seen as a referendum on the Biden presidency and a possible harbinger of the 2022 midterm elections, so the stakes are very high. It might speak to how vulnerable the Republicans feel that they are trying so desperately to muddy the waters before the votes come in — but we also have to come to terms with the fact that they are clearly planning to do this every single election we ever have until they succeed in getting rid of elections for good.

At every level, the Republican Party is openly hostile to democracy and any system of governance that doesn’t give them the ability to impose their psychotic ideological agenda on an unwilling nation and are clearly willing to burn it all to the ground in order to make that happen. We must fight harder than we ever have before to make sure that we win what elections we can…while we still have the opportunity to do so.
