Veterans Day is supposed to be a day for Americans to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave servicemen and women over the years to defend and fortify our democracy, an opportunity for solemn reflection and sincere gratitude. For Donald Trump — a man who has repeatedly denigrated military veterans even as he offers the boilerplate Republican lip service to their bravery — it’s just a day like every other for him to whine and make everything about himself.
The disgraced former president released a video of himself seated at a desk with an American flag placed prominently behind him. Before watching his egocentric clip, it’s worth remembering what a disaster he was as Commander-in-Chief.
Trump weakened our NATO alliances, betrayed our Kurdish allies, flirted with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, bent over backward to please Russian President Vladimir Putin, and rarely if ever ready his daily presidential briefings. He liked to present himself as a strong military leader but was too lazy and frankly too stupid to actually do the hard work of leading.
In his video today, he promised to return to power, a frightening prospect for anyone who actually cares about this nation’s national security. Trump began his little spiel by once again pretending that he has respect for our veterans.
“On this Veterans Day I’d like to pay tribute to all those incredible people — and you are incredible people — who served well and so strong and so powerfully in the United States armed forces. We love you. Our nation respects you. The world respects you and we will come back, ” said Trump, before veering into more comfortable, selfish rhetorical terrain.
“Our country has gone through a lot,” he added. “The last period of time has been very, very tough, watching what you had to watch. But our country will be back and will be back stronger than ever. Happy Veterans Day.”
This man is so driven by his self-obsession that he couldn’t even release a Veterans Day video without smearing Biden’s successful presidency and mentioning his own plans to possibly run for the White House again. What a joke.
