OPINION: Justice Clarence Thomas must be impeached if he won’t resign
The United States Supreme Court is supposed to uphold the law of the land, preserve our Democracy and be a nonpolitical biased institution. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Justice Clarence Thomas’s wife, Ginni Thomas, not only attended the January 6th Stop the Steal rally but has been exposed as literally giving orders via texts to Trump’s Chief of Staff Mark Medows to not concede and to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
This is a clear assault on our Democracy by a person of power and influence. Not only is this a constitutional violation, but this is also a criminal conspiracy, and Ginni Thomas must be held accountable. And this is just only part of the issue belonging to a much bigger problem.
Supreme Court Justice Clearance Thomas has been working on January 6th insurrection matters which makes being the husband of the insurrectionist a conflict of interest. The fact that he doesn’t recuse himself of these duties is an ethics violation, as stated in this article.
“Particularly, it is Justice Thomas’ stubborn refusal to recuse himself from January 6th cases that go against both the federal Code of Conduct for United States Judges and the American Bar Association’s Model Code of Judicial Conduct. The ABA says a judge should not preside over any case where their spouse could be a material witness or has more than minimal interest in the case. The federal code says that judges shouldn’t intervene when their spouse is a material witness or would be substantially affected,” Grant Stern writes.
The Republican Party that I once knew — before Trump — used to stand for the Constitution, ethics, rule of law, and preserving our Democracy. It’s now the party of sedition, treason, obstruction of justice. The United States Congress and the Supreme Court must force Thomas to resign — or impeach him — because while he remains, the Supreme Court’s integrity is compromised. The United States government must show that no one is above the law, including Justices and their spouses.
When I enlisted in the United States Army, I took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States of America. As a veteran now, I still continue to uphold that oath of enlistment, and I am calling on Congress to do the right thing by upholding their oath and pressuring Justice Clearance Thomas to resign. If he continues to refuse, then he must be impeached. We have to do all that we can to preserve our Democracy and the rule of law.
