“NO TALLYWHACKERS” — Madison Cawthorn gives his own definition of a woman
After back-to-back controversies, you would think freshman Congressman Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) would get the hint and fall back, but, apparently, laying low is a foreign concept.
Cawthorn faced backlash from the GOP after calling Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky a thug. Most recently, he was called to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) office to answer for comments Cawthorn made on the right-wing podcast Warrior Poet Society, accusing senior GOP politicians of inviting him to “sex get-togethers” and openly doing cocaine.
Forced to admit he had exaggerated details, many thought Cawthorn would take a break from the spotlight, licking his wounds before doing or saying something that would again leave a majority of the country scratching their heads in wonderment – like the fact that Cawthorn is an elected official.
The break wasn’t as long as we thought.
Not long at all. On the morning of April 4th, the poster child of privilege himself – Madison Cawthorn – took to the House floor to give, of all things, his definition of “a woman”.
“You might amend a bill, but you’ll never amend biology. Science is not Burger King. you can’t just have it your way…take notes Madame Speaker. I’m about to define what a woman is for you,” Rep. Cawthorn cluelessly declared.
After that grandiose disclaimer, Cawthorn went on to not so eloquently define a woman as having “XX chromosomes” and “no tallywhacker”.
Why is Cawthorn posturing about what entails womanhood on the floor of the House of Representatives, despite his lack of qualifications on the subject? He is referring to the uproar among the right after Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson failed to take the bait from GOP Senator Marsha Blackburn’s questioning of the history-making SCOTUS nominees as the first African-American female nominated to the bench.
When Blackburn asked Brown Jackson if she would “provide a definition for the word woman”, Judge Jackson responded, “I’m not a biologist.”
Applauded by many for her neutral, and technically correct, response – it didn’t sit well with the party of family values. — a party waging war on the transgender community. Not getting the answer she wanted to the not-so-thinly-veiled “gotcha” question, Blackburn had this to say:
“The fact that you can’t give me a straight answer about something as fundamental as what a woman is underscores the dangers of the kind of progressive education that we are hearing about.”
But Congressman Cawthorn has never met a culture war that he didn’t want to add his two cents to. Lest we forget, remember his reasoning, on the same House floor last month, as to why the US should be hesitant in assisting Ukraine in their war with Russia in a statement in which he referred to country singer Toby Keith as a “great philosopher” and said: “We put a boot in their ass. It’s the American Way.”
In December of 2021, in an anti-abortion rant – again on the House floor – Cawthorne equated women to “earthen vessels.” Though I’m no expert, I will go out on a limb and say that neither “earthen vessels” nor “no tallywhacker” appear next to the word woman in any dictionary I know of.
Someone should tell Cawthorn.
