The Alabama Senate candidate backed by Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) just received an endorsement from disgraced ex-president Donald Trump. Former Senate aide Katie Britt is currently in a runoff with Congressman Mo Brooks (R-AL), the man Trump had previously endorsed.
Infamously showing up to the Ellipse the day of the Capitol Riot in a bullet-proof vest, Brooks’ GOP political star lost its shine when Trump withdrew his support of the seditious congressman after Brooks did the unforgivable in MAGA-land by suggesting that Republicans move on from the 2020 election during a rally for U.S. Senate in Cullman, Alabama. The congressman told attendees to “look forward” to 2022 and 2024 and put the 2020 election “behind them.” it was a suggestion that prompted boos from the crowd of trump loyalists. Brooks’ comments were seemingly a drastic 180-degree turn from those Brooks made just days after Election Day 2020:
I urge @realDonaldTrump & Republicans to fight Biden’s unlawful victory claims. There’s no way I’ll vote in the House to ratify the Electoral College votes of states where illegal votes distorted the will of the people in those states who voted legally.https://t.co/EEt4soixaS

With Trump, however, loyalty is a one-way street – his way…or no way. Whatever position Brooks held prior held no weight with the megalomaniacal ex-president. The former guy was quick to react to what he perceived as Brooks’ betrayal, publicly announcing his break-up with one of his staunchest allies. Trump released a statement saying:
“When I endorsed Mo Brooks, he took a 44-point lead and was unstoppable. He then hired a new campaign staff who ‘brilliantly’ convinced him to ‘stop talking about the 2020 Election. Very sad but, since he decided to go in another direction, so have I, and I am hereby withdrawing my Endorsement of Mo Brooks for the Senate. I don’t think the great people of Alabama will disagree with me. Election Fraud must be captured and stopped, or we won’t have a country anymore.”
Also not surprising is Trump’s about-face endorsement of Britt. A candidate that he at one time said was “not in any way qualified and is certainly not what our country needs.” That statement was made less than a year ago — before Trump rescinded his support of Mo Brooks. Instead, the back-peddling seditionist-in-chief was all in on Brooks at that time, saying that McConnell was “wasting money” on Britt’s campaign and telling his supporters to “Vote for Mo Brooks.”
Astonishingly, in true sycophant fashion, Brooks is still kissing the MAGA King’s ring, despite accusing the former guy of being the “only man in American politics who could get conned by Mitch McConnell twice in an Alabama Senate race.”
“Alabama grassroots remember in 2017 when Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell got involved in a Senate primary in Alabama – and we rejected them. The people of Alabama will decide,” Brooks went on to say after Trump’s endorsement of Britt.
The Alabama lawmaker conspicuously left that criticism out of this interview with Chris Hayes just four days ago.
Rep. Mo Brooks on his "belief" that the 2020 election was “stolen:"
“If you want to spend a lot of time debating that subject, I’ll take you on toe-to-toe.”

Katie Britt has notably refrained from joining Trump and Brooks in their public criticisms of the Senate Minority Leader whose super PAC has donated upwards of $2 million to Britts campaign and to whom Brooks has publicly dedicated a campaign promise to see McConnell’s hold on the GOP Senate body loosened. Britt is currently ahead in the Senate race, according to recent polls, beating Brooks by a sizeable margin, but still short of the 50% needed to avoid a runoff.
Whether McConnell and Trump’s endorsement will be enough to fend off Brooks — who has been endorsed by both Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rand Paul (R-KY) — remains to be seen. We’ll have to patiently wait until the Alabama GOP primary election on June 21st to find out how this battle royale will turn out.
