The biggest bombshells so far from the testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson, the former aide to Mark Meadows, Trump’s White House Chief of Staff, before the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th insurrection are the revelations that first of all, Donald Trump was fully aware that at least some people in the crowd at his “Stop the Steal” rally were armed to the teeth and potentially dangerous, and, even more shocking, that the former president assaulted a Secret Service agent in an attempt to get to the Capitol after his speech at the rally.
Hutchinson testified that Trump was informed that members of the MAGA hordes were carrying weapons that were later verified to include AR-15 assault rifles and Glock pistols. Yet, Trump was more concerned that metal detectors set up at the perimeter of the rally site at the Ellipse near the White House were slowing or preventing the crowd from filling the site of the event and presenting the appearance of the maximum allowable crowd.
Trump reportedly told his security detail that these armed demonstrators were no danger to him and to shut down the magnetometers to allow as many people as possible into the rally site.

While that testimony alone would have been sufficiently newsworthy to justify today’s surprise hearing, Hutchinson had more to reveal about Donald Trump’s behavior on January 6th.

She went on to relate what she had been told about Trump’s behavior in the limo after leaving the “Stop the Steal” rally. During his speech, Trump had told the crowd that he wanted to march with them to the Capitol and had his Secret Service detail scramble to find a way to get him there by car once it was determined that walking with the mob would not be an option.
Once Trump was in the vehicle he was informed that the Secret Service had determined that it would not be safe to bring him to the Capitol. To say that he did not respond well is the understatement of the century.

Hutchinson relayed what she had been told by one of her associates — while in the presence of a Secret Service agent who did not dispute the account — that Trump became livid when he was told that instead, he would be returning to the White House.

According to Hutchinson’s account, Trump then lunged at the driver and tried to grab the steering wheel of the vehicle to try to gain control of it to go to the Capitol, while also attempting to grab the driver by the throat.

Hutchinson’s testimony is continuing at the Capitol as this article is being written. Whether or not her remaining testimony will contain even more blockbuster revelations, what she’s already revealed has made today’s last-minute hearing completely worthwhile.
