HYPOCRISY: GOP Rep. votes against gay marriage before attending gay son’s wedding

Just days after voting against codifying gay marriage, Congressman Glenn Thompson (R-PA) attended his gay son’s wedding and said in his speech that, as a parent, “We love it when they find their one true love, especially when they become a part of our families then. That’s what we’re rooting for.”

Just when you thought that Republican hypocrisy couldn’t get any worse.

News of the nuptials was first reported by Gawker. Unaware at the time whether Thompson was going to attend, the media outlet pointed out that the Pennsylvania congressman was one of the Republican majority who voted “NAY” in a roll call vote three days before the wedding.

Following Thompson’s vote against the “Respect for Marriage Act” that would protect the right to same-sex marriage on the federal level – including that of his son and son-in-law – the representative’s press secretary, Madison Stone, said the bill was a Democratic “stunt,” accusing the party of not addressing gas prices or inflation.

The press secretary leaves out that a majority of Republicans voted against those measures too.

Three days later, Stone would send an email saying that Thompson and his wife are “very happy” with their son’s marriage.

“Congressman and Mrs. Thompson were thrilled to attend and celebrate their son’s marriage on Friday night as he began this new chapter in his life,” the email announced.

Rep. Thompson’s son – unnamed to protect his privacy – confirmed his father’s presence at the ceremony and told NBC News that he “married the love of [his] life”

In an audio recording of the wedding toast, obtained by BuzzFeed from a guest, Thompson’s gay marriage hypocrisy is on full display. The recording reveals him thanking his son-in-law and praising the finding of “true love.”

“And as they grow and as they get a little older, we also hope and pray they’re going to find that one true love so that they have the opportunity to experience that: Someone to grow old with. So we’re just really thankful that you’re here. We’ve been fortunate with three sons, and [REDACTED]’s done a great job of adding to the family,” Thompson said.

Thompson’s actions are completely in line with today’s GOP, taking rights from others while reserving them for themselves.
